THEME SCRIPTURE:

16 He who had received the five talents went at once and traded with them, and he made five talents more. 17 So also he who had the two talents made two talents more. 18 But he who had received the one talent went and dug in the ground and hid his master’s money. 19 Now after a long time the master of those servants came and settled accounts with them. 20 And he who had received the five talents came forward, bringing five talents more, saying, ‘Master, you delivered to me five talents; here, I have made five talents more.’ 21 His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master.’ 22 And he also who had the two talents came forward, saying, ‘Master, you delivered to me two talents; here, I have made two talents more.’ 23 His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master.’ 24 He also who had received the one talent came forward, saying, ‘Master, I knew you to be a hard man, reaping where you did not sow, and gathering where you scattered no seed, 25 so I was afraid, and I went and hid your talent in the ground. Here, you have what is yours.’
26 But his master answered him, ‘You wicked and slothful servant!

— Matthew 25:16-26 ESV

TODAY’S PASSAGE:

Moses said to the Lord, ‘Pardon your servant, Lord. I have never been eloquent, neither in the past nor since you have spoken to your servant. I am slow of speech and tongue.’ The Lord said to him, ‘Who gave human beings their mouths? Who makes them deaf or mute? Who gives them sight or makes them blind? Is it not I, the Lord? Now go; I will help you speak and will teach you what to say.’

- Exodus 4:10-12

REFLECTION:

Have you ever felt a deep desire to do something but felt inadequate to do it. Maybe you felt like you didn’t have enough time. Maybe you felt like you simply didn’t have the mental capacity to think about it longer than a second. I think we have all had dreams, goals, and plans that have fallen through because of an excuse. In life I think that there are some very valid excuses. You might want to be a jet fighter pilot, but if you are too tall or too short for the cockpit, that is a valid excuse. You might want to be an Olympic gymnast, but if you don’t have good balance, that might be a valid excuse. I think the problem becomes when we start to think that invalid excuses are totally valid excuses. This especially comes into play with what God is calling us to.

When God gives us a task, when he gives us things to manage and steward, he knows that in His strength, you will be capable of the task. So often, however, we get in our own way and create excuses as to why we can’t succeed. We are too young or too old. We aren’t smart enough or fast enough or charismatic enough. But if it is God will in our life, the only thing that will stop us from succeeding is ourselves. We allow ourselves not to succeed because we tell our selves we can’t. The excuse will rob us of Gods blessing.

THOUGHTS TO PONDER:

Are there excuses that you are making that you need to let go of? Take some time to self reflect over the things that you have learned this week. Allow the Holy Spirit to move in that self reflection. Hard work is important to your faith life. How are you utilizing hard work to steward what God has given you?
