THEME SCRIPTURE:

The Parable of the Ten Virgins

1“At that time the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom. 2 Five of them were foolish and five were wise. 3 The foolish ones took their lamps but did not take any oil with them. 4 The wise ones, however, took oil in jars along with their lamps. 5 The bridegroom was a long time in coming, and they all became drowsy and fell asleep. 6 “At midnight the cry rang out: ‘Here’s the bridegroom! Come out to meet him!’ 7 “Then all the virgins woke up and trimmed their lamps. 8 The foolish ones said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil; our lamps are going out.’ 9 “‘No,’ they replied, ‘there may not be enough for both us and you. Instead, go to those who sell oil and buy some for yourselves.’ 10 “But while they were on their way to buy the oil, the bridegroom arrived. The virgins who were ready went in with him to the wedding banquet. And the door was shut. 11 “Later the others also came. ‘Lord, Lord,’ they said, ‘open the door for us!’ 12 “But he replied, ‘Truly I tell you, I don’t know you.’ 13 “Therefore keep watch, because you do not know the day or the hour.

- Matthew 25:1-13

TODAY’S PASSAGE:

16 John answered them all, “I baptize you with water. But one who is more powerful than I will come, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.

- Luke 3:16

REFLECTION:

When it comes to staying spiritually ready there are two things that we have to do. We need to fan the flame and we need to posses the oil. The flame represents a bold and visible faith, one that shines brightly in any darkness. It is the purity and infectious enthusiasm for God that we should have in our spirits. It is the act of having an active and courageous Christian life. It is being unashamed to stand out and make a difference in a world even when that world feels shrouded in spiritual darkness.

The oil, on the other hand, symbolizes the presence of God. The oil is crucial for sustaining the flame. Just as oil in the Old Testament signified anointing and divine presence, the oil also represents God's presence in our daily lives. To keep this oil in our lives requires a continual process of spiritual refinement. This refinement often comes through the crushing and pressing of our worldly desires and sinful ways, transforming us to carry His presence more fully. To have the oil is to live righteously and obediently, allowing the challenges and trials we face to produce a deeper connection with God. Together, the flame and the oil depict a life of vibrant faith and consistent readiness, fueled by God's presence and marked by purity and boldness.

THOUGHTS TO PONDER:

Are you actively growing both the flame and the oil in your spiritual life? How are you allowing God's presence to refine and transform you, especially in moments of hardship or temptation? Remember, maintaining a strong faith requires both the courage to stand boldly in the world and the discipline to remain connected to God's presence.

Take some time today to reflect on a recent experience where you felt your faith was tested. How did you respond, and what did you learn about the importance of having both the flame and the oil in your life?
