Scripture - 1 Samuel 23
Observation - Saul was in hot pursuit of David, but couldn’t seem to catch up with him. Saul’s son Jonathan offered David comfort. He encouraged David to look to God, reminding David of his rightful place as future king. He offered hope, confirmed God’s plan, and these two friends made a covenant again. This new agreement placed Jonathan in a position as second-in-command to David, a huge sacrifice on Jonathan’s part.
Application - Discouragement. It can hit us like a ton of bricks some days. The enemy loves nothing more than to discourage us from the plans that God has for us. David must have felt some discouragement too as he continued to run from Saul. Instead of allowing that feeling to keep you down, look to God’s word for hope and encouragement. Ask someone to pray with you that will lift you up during those times.
Prayer - Spirit of the Living God, correct my thinking. Help me to be strong and courageous in my thought-life. Let fear and doubt be far from me. Instead fuel my thoughts with faith; in the name of Jesus Christ, who reigns supremely with You and the Holy Spirit forever and ever. Amen.
