GROW UP - WEEK Four - Day ONe

MONDAY - Obey Your Leaders

Hello and welcome to your Daily Devos, following our Grow Up series at 29:11!

Take some time today to read through the provided scriptures, meditate on the lessons we’ve learned this week, and journal your prayers. Have an amazing week, 29:11 Church!

THEME SCRIPTURE:

Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. 2 Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves.

- Romans 13:1-2

TODAY’S PASSAGE:

Slaves, obey your earthly masters in everything, and do it, not only when their eye is on you and to curry their favor, but with sincerity of heart and reverence for the Lord. Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.

- Colossians 3:22-24

REFLECTION:

Today, we stand on the shoulders of Christian leaders like William Wilberforce and many others who campaigned against slavery. When the New Testament was written, the Christian church was a minority– Christians didn’t have the influence or voting power to work for the abolition of slavery. Verses like these in Colossians 3 don’t condone slavery, they simply speak to the context of the culture that the church of that day was living in. It’s as if the author Paul was saying– whatever spot you live in, whether the CEO of a company, a manager, or you’re an entry-level employee, God has invited us to have a different perspective than the world. God invites us to work as if we are working directly for him, with sincere hearts, working with ‘all our hearts.’ When you honor the authority God has placed in your life, you honor what God has chosen for you in this season. So stop holding back, obey the leader, the boss, the authority God has placed in your life, as if you were working for the LORD.

THOUGHTS TO PONDER:

Take a few minutes to list people who have authority in your life. Take a few minutes to thank God that he’s placed leaders and authority in your life. What does it mean for you to listen to and obey the people, the authorities that God has placed in your life?
